In Which a Plan of Action Comes Together

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

STAR WARS
Silent Destiny

Episode III
THE EYE OF OBLIVION

The crew of Silent Destiny has recovered Caster’s long-missing ship, the Vainglory, though she’s in no shape to fly after their most recent scrape with the HOUNDS OF WINTER.

Capturing Marius Krath alive, they learned that the Hounds were seeking Silent Destiny for something hidden on board by Kes’s late husband – the EYE OF OBLIVION.

Having found this Eye, but unaware of what secrets it contains, they now travel to Nar Shaddaa in search of the mysterious BROKER, who hired the Hounds to find it….

SESSION 33

Caster Novastar:
“Ok, but seriously, do we have a plan?”

Kes-Varn:
“When have plans ever worked?”

GM:
Bella: “This is insanely encrypted,” she says, directly to Kes. “If I try to open it, it’s designed to erase all the data. It’s looking for a key.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Not so’s I’ve seen.”
“Both to having one, or it being very useful.”

Caster Novastar:
“Just because they haven’t worked yet, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try! It’s what you keep telling me about complements, after all.”

Kaylani Seren:
“I’ll have you know, I’ve had many a success with compliments.”

GM:
Zeva nods sagely.

Kaylani Seren:
“Wait, no, I didn’t mean it like … though that is true too.”

Caster Novastar:
flies over his head “Point stands. We need a key-thinger, what are the odds that this broker also needs the key?”
“Or has the key maybe?”

Kes-Varn:
“Only way to find out is to ask, no?”

GM:
Bella: “Your other option would be to try and find out where Nalin got it from.”

Kaylani Seren:
“That is assuredly not the ONLY way, and is probably a TERRIBLE way, and yet, I find myself agreeing that we should try it?”

Kes-Varn:
“Would you be able to trace the make?”

Caster Novastar:
“Also, while we’re just spitballing, we could not figure out what’s inside of it and just try to sell it to the Broker.”

Kes-Varn:
“No.”

Caster Novastar:
“… fair point.”

Kaylani Seren:
throws a chair cushion at Caster’s head

Caster Novastar:
is promptly shut up by pillow to the face

GM:
“I might be able to, yeah.” Bella’s tone gets more serious. “If Nalin kept any logs on board the ship, there might be something there, too.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes nods slowly. “I still keep his stuff. I haven’t… looked through it in a long time.” She motions for Bella to follow her.

GM:
“Scuse me, everyone,” Bella says, following Kes, still holding the holograph.

Kaylani Seren:
also follows, whether invited or not

GM:
Only once she sees that Kay is going does Zeva get up to follow.

Caster Novastar:
“Well, if everyone else is doing it…” climbs out from behind cushion

GM:
Bella: “So, um, where we goin?”

Kes-Varn:
She leads them to the back of one of the cargo bays where she kicks open a dusty old durasteel crate, revealing stacks of old datapads and storage items. She shuffles things aside. “Taxes, bills, all the good stuff,” she mumbles. Finally, she pulls out a smaller box and passes it to Bella. “Our ship logs. Sorted by date starting from when we took off on our own. Up until… I took over.”

GM:
Bella nods, gravely, taking the box.

Caster Novastar:
starts rifling through the taxes and bills, because once a white-collar criminal, always a white collar criminal

Kes-Varn:
She swats his hands away.

Kaylani Seren:
smacks him on the back of the head

Caster Novastar:
“What?”

Kes-Varn:
“We barely made a profit, stop.”

GM:
(My guess is that, Bella being so bon vivant and all, Kes’s past has NEVER BEEN DISCUSSED here)

Caster Novastar:
“Yeah, but I’m sure we can cut a corner or two to kick that margin up a bit.”

Kes-Varn:
She moves to shut the crate, over his fingers if she has to.

Caster Novastar:
pulls hands back “Ok, ok! We’ll talk about it later.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Don’t think we will.”

Caster Novastar:
rolls his eyes “There’s more important stuff anyway. Anything neat in the logs?”

Kaylani Seren:
“Think she’ll need more than a five second glance at the /outsides/.”

GM:
Bella: “I’m sure the Empire will have bigger charges laid against us by the time they finally catch us, buuuut.” She sits with her legs under her, plugs her datapad into the first log, and starts scanning.

Caster Novastar:
“Do you work better if we all stare at you, or is that going to kick up the pressure?”

GM:
“Dunno, I usually work alone. Never had a cheering section before. Might be helpful…”

Caster Novastar:
“Captain, do we have pom-poms?”
“I’d check the accounts, but I just got banned from those.”

Kes-Varn:
“We do have an outfit for you, though.”

GM:
Zeva stifles a giggle.

Caster Novastar:
“It does have tassels. Those are almost pom-poms.”

GM:
J16 issues a string of chirps [i like this plan i’m glad to be a part of it]

Kaylani Seren:
giggles without any attempt to hide it

Caster Novastar:
“Thank you, J-16. I do think I’d look rather dashing in it.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes frowns at him in suspicion

GM:
Bella: “Too bad Shal’mak isn’t around any more; I’m sure she woulda loved to see you model it.”
J16: [buuuuurn]

Kes-Varn:
Kes snorts, but it’s not a laugh.

Caster Novastar:
“Seeing me model can’t be that bad of an assault. And if it is, then we have a new weapon!”

GM:
Bella laughs at that, finally losing some of her tension.

Kaylani Seren:
“And on that note, I think maybe we all need some dinner while we’re plotting?”
wanders back towards the mess hall to stress cook

Kes-Varn:
(could anyone eat after hearing that?)

Kaylani Seren:
(Kay doesn’t even want to eat, she just needs to cook. You all are going to eat whether you want to or not.)

GM:
Bella has to be convinced to bring her work into the mess hall, and she keeps working through the meal.

Kes-Varn:
Kes mostly just picks at her food.

GM:
Just as the sweets are being brought out, she hooks up a new log and says, within seconds, “Hello, what have we here?”

Caster Novastar:
Caster eats, seemingly unaffected by the stress

Kes-Varn:
Kes leans forward suddenly.

Kaylani Seren:
almost drops food all over the floor

GM:
“Someone deleted some files on this one and removed the matrix links that… " She looks up and realizes she’s about to lose everybody in a sea of jargon. “Let me see if I can recover any of it.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes motions half-encouragingly, half-confusedly.

Caster Novastar:
“Do the hack on the files? That’s the right phrase?”

Kaylani Seren:
groans

GM:
Bella shrugs and sets her utensils down to tap at the screen more furiously. “Do the slice, maybe?”

Caster Novastar:
“Do the slice on the files. Got it for next time.”

GM:
Bella, eyes on the screen: “I’m sorry to get everyone excited so soon, but this can be a painstaking process. It might be hours or days before I can oh HERE we go.” She grins.
Zeva shakes her head in disbelief.

Kes-Varn:
Kes slides her chair closer.

Caster Novastar:
leans back “Well, I guess we won’t talk about odds on the galactic… uh, sportsball game.”

Kaylani Seren:
sighs and rolls eyes this time

GM:
“‘Garbled, garbled, blivio, gobbledy gook, acquired fr*m rret Jax.’ Do you know a somebody Jax, Kes?” (she doesn’t)

Kes-Varn:
Kes shakes her head. “I know a lot of people, but no Jaxes.”

Caster Novastar:
“Jaxi might be the correct plural there.”

Kes-Varn:
“Pardon me.”

GM:
J16: bwomp [actually both are acceptable]

Caster Novastar:
“Pardoned. There was another half a word in there— blivio? That mean anything to anyone?”

GM:
Bella: “This part’s clear, though: ‘Deliver to Yu Lien, Falleen.’ Key to be deliv**** separ*****”

Kaylani Seren:
taps j16 on the headwhispers* “good to know, thanks”

Caster Novastar:
“Wait. Wait.”
Caster twirls a finger in the air, staring intently at the table

GM:
Zeva: “You know that name, Caster?”

Caster Novastar:
“Yu Lien. She was in the Commerce Guild back, oh before the war.”

Kaylani Seren:
“that was a bit of a time back. Probably about the right one, though?” glances at Kes

GM:
Zeva: “Right. Right! I know that name, too, or did.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes stares between the two of them. “What does she do? Where is she now?”

GM:
Zeva sighs. “I missed the last two years of the Wars.”

Caster Novastar:
“Now? I have no idea. She was a pretty big player, was a Separatist. Common wisdom is that she died in a raid, but rumor has it that she went underground afterward.”

Kaylani Seren:
“’course she did. that is entirely how our luck works”

Caster Novastar:
“According to a diplomat I once got drunk at a party, she was last seen on Falleen. Could still be hiding out there.”

Kaylani Seren:
“I mean, next port we’re at, I could ask around about Falleen. Usually someone I know landing or about to leave would be willing to gossip.”

GM:
(You do have a couple of stops to make on the way to Nar Shaddaa)
Bella gets a light bulb: “J16, start a search in your Black Sun database for criminals with the last name of Jax.”

Kes-Varn:
“Falleen — the smelly ones, right? Or they have good senses of smell? Something like that.”
(oh I forgot…………sdflk this is why I have such a hard time late tuesday nights)

Kaylani Seren:
“And Yu Lien, while you’re at it. Just in case.”

GM:
J16 chirps merrily. [i’m useful and people are paying attention to me]

Kaylani Seren:
reminds self to ask for Marta’s file, later, in private … should probably stop avoiding that

GM:
Bella: “I’m betting at least one of these three people knows where this key is.”
Zeva: “Or WHAT it is.”

Caster Novastar:
“It’ll be whoever we try to go after last, so which one do we like the least?”

GM:
Bella: “That, too.”
Bella: “A Chadra-Fan bounty hunter’s middleman, a Gossam war criminal, or a cipher?”

Caster Novastar:
“Whoever’s closest, really. We’ll get into equal amounts of trouble regardless of who we pick.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Oh, those all sound lovely.”

GM:
(Once you come ’round the galactic core, Falleen and Nar Shaddaa will be about equidistant. One thing that could be a factor is that Kay and Kes have visited the latter a couple of times but not the former)

Kaylani Seren:
“Nar Shaddaa is good for finding out info on a lot of things, though? I mean, we have some idea where to start, at least.”
Kes-Varn:
(I’m thinkin I’m thinkin)
(leaning towards Narsh as well) “I also know more people on Nar Shaddaa. I wouldn’t have any clout on Falleen.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Kinda what I just said, there. " grins “It’s good we think alike.”

Kes-Varn:
“Then unless anyone else has any input, that sounds like our answer.”

GM:
Bella: “We can also try to gather intel when we stop at Corsin.”

Caster Novastar:
“Sounds good, when have the pair of you ever had the same idea and that idea also turned out to be bad?”

Kaylani Seren:
“Well. It used to almost always be good? Back before … hand waves around at everyone all of this?”

GM:
Zeva and Bella both seem keenly interested in the answer to Caster’s question.

Kaylani Seren:
“But, you know, there’s good with the … all of this, too. So?” *shrugs*leans sideways to bump her shoulder against Zeva while she smiles*

Caster Novastar:
“Don’t lose your bluster now! Confidence. The answer is ‘never’ regardless of the facts. Forward!”

Kaylani Seren:
“I think we’re doing all right.”

Caster Novastar:
“There are worst places, and we even have all of our limbs. We’re practically champions of the galaxy.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes leans her chin into her palm. “You’re unusually positive.” She bobs her head back at Bella. “We’ll see what we’ll see, and head to Nar Shaddaa if we see nothing.”

Caster Novastar:
“I currently sorta, kinda, know where my ship is. This is a good week.”

Kaylani Seren:
“You have a point there. Take the almost a win?” actually pats CAster sympathetically on the shoulder

GM:
Zeva, grinning at the sight: " A very good week."

Caster Novastar:
doesn’t recoil from the touch, but he’s still uncomfortable with it “I’m taking it as a complete win. Best week. And we even got shot at, and it’s still a good week. Things are looking up!”

GM:
CUT TO:
Silent Destiny emerges from hyperspace in the Corsin system.
Corsin turns out to be a beautiful planet, even if you basically only see the galactic gas station.

Caster Novastar:
“Oh wow. This is going to be a surprise, but I like this planet.”

Kaylani Seren:
“You’re really starting to weird me out, Caster. Did you get hit on the head and not tell anyone?”

Kes-Varn:
“If you hit him again, he might change back.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Maybe he’s an evil twin? Just forgot to do the evil part?”

GM:
Zeva, not quite joking: “Perhaps he’s been possessed by a dark side spirit.” She squints to see if his hair is changing color.

Kaylani Seren:
gigglesnort

Caster Novastar:
“I… ok never mind, please stop staring at my hair. It’s weirding me out.”

GM:
Reluctantly, Zeva stops.

Kaylani Seren:
“See, now you know how you’re making us feel.”

Caster Novastar:
“… oh.” frowns slightly, but it’s just not a souring as it should be “better?”

Kaylani Seren:
tilts head “Not … quite? But thanks for trying.”

GM:
J16: ba boop, ba beep boop [tiny steps]
(Those who are going ashore to gather information, let me get some rolls of some kind based on how you go about doing so.)
(Bella now has proper HoloNet access, so she’ll be working from home today.)
Kes-Varn:
(lucky duck)
(So we’re mostly asking about the broker and the banker)

GM:
(correct)

Kes-Varn:
(So Kes would help Kay here? with a Forceful assist if her charm fails?)
(Or that)(in that case Kes then might ask among…… rougher crowds? spacers, captains, shipping folks?)

GM:
(so noted)

Kes-Varn:
(Forcefully)
(Aggressively inquiring about mostly the broker and a little abotu the banker, since rich people tend to piss poorer people off. and that’s a 3 + 2 + 2 from a stunt = 7)

Caster Novastar:
(Rumor Hound + 2 (Caster has an ear for overhearing dirt), Refined Tastes +2 (Caster can speak to this crowd, he knows what looks good), Smarmy High Powered Businessman +2, (Caster is working tradespeople. Caster knows trade people) Careful +3, roll -3 = 6)

Kaylani Seren:
(Kay pubcrawls, loudly greets and buys drinks and dances and all that shit to invoke “charming is a verb” to get someone to spill something about the Broker. flashy +4, stunt +2 rolls -2 = 4)

GM:
An evening’s worth of work nets you the following information.
(Also the work that J16 and Bella are doing)
Tesvalo connects criminals with people who want to hire criminals: what Shadowrun calls a “Mr. Johnson.” Since he works in Hutta Town, he does so because the boss of Hutta Town, Grakkus the Hutt, allows it.
Word on the street is that the two of them have occasional conflicts, especially recently.
Apparently Yu Lien is still on Falleen, if in hiding. Local criminals can probably help you find her. She definitely has not turned up anywhere else. J16 finds Black Sun intel connecting her to the Justice Action Network, who blew up that medical facility you delivered bacta to.
And J16 finds a criminal record for a thief named Barrett Jax, who hasn’t been seen in the last four years. The Empire had several warrants out on him, but doesn’t any more, so maybe they captured or killed him. Further investigation is necessary.

Kes-Varn:
(Does it say where he was last seen?)

GM:
(He mostly operated in the Core Worlds.)
Bella finds an interrogation record of another criminal who said that she saw Jax on Bothawui, heading somewhere in the Expansion Region.

Kaylani Seren:
*grunts*drinks more water*closes eyes* “I am too old for this style of information gathering anymore. Just saying.”

Caster Novastar:
“That’s rough. Still, though, you did good!”

Kaylani Seren:
“Who /are/ you and what did you do with the slimo we were getting used to?”

Caster Novastar:
“Right here. Sip the water slowly, no rushing around today.”
“I hope.”

Kaylani Seren:
considers throwing glass at his head this time

Caster Novastar:
“I’m gonna float an idea. Let’s go after Jax. I feel like we have the most information on him.”

GM:
Bella: “I’ve got the name of the criminal they interrogated; we could try to find them.”

Kaylani Seren:
“What? We know his /name/. That’s nothing.”

Caster Novastar:
“Look, we know a few facts about Jax’s life, we have a vague location, and we have cover to go asking about him due to the expired warrants.”

Kaylani Seren:
“The question is, do we want to try and convince some paranoid anti-Imperial that we are /also/ anti-imperial, or go deal with Hutt politics?”

Kes-Varn:
(what were those warrants for?)
(I mean, Kes knows hutt politics better than anything else…..)

GM:
(data theft and similar crimes)

Caster Novastar:
“Or the other two. At least I didn’t get something thrown at me in the refusal.”
“Ok, hutt politics then?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes nods her head slowly. “They’re the most familiar to me.”

Kaylani Seren:
eyeroll “We /know/ Nar Shaddaa enough I think we’d get more info to help elsewhere.” shrugs Basically I’m agreeing with you again, Captain."

Kes-Varn:
“The other two are not in our territory.”

GM:
Zeva: “You worked for a Hutt, Captain? Am I remembering that right?”

Kes-Varn:
“Yeah. And met others. You had to know about it to work for her security detail.”

GM:
Bella: “It always feels weird to say, but: Caster’s right. Hutt politics it is.”
