STAR WARS
Silent Destiny

Episode III
THE EYE OF OBLIVION

The crew of Silent Destiny has found Caster’s long-missing ship, the Vainglory, in the Iridonian city of Wortan.

Following a pitched battle with Marius Krath, one of the infamous HOUNDS OF WINTER, they have reclaimed the now-disabled Vainglory.

Before turning Krath over to fellow bounty hunter IG-88, our heroes have some questions for him about the mysterious EYE OF OBLIVION before Imperial agents arrive….

SESSION 32

GM:
So everyone is back on Silent Destiny (for the moment, even those who ended the session on the Vainglory) with Marius Krath. The smoldering Vainglory is docked next to you. IG-88 and the IG-2000 hover above you.

Caster Novastar:
“Hey, can we do the whole questioning thing quickly?”
“Because I’d like to take a cheapshot or two before we give him back over.”

GM:
Krath is just now regaining consciousness.

Caster Novastar:
“Actually, no wait, one shot for each of the small fires currently burning on my ship. Feels fair.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes obligingly rattles Krath by the shoulder, jostling his head further. “Up and at ’em, buddy. What the hells do you want with me and my ship?”

GM:
R4-J16 beeps a string of beeps. “He’s right,” Bella says. “That IS a lot of fires.”

Caster Novastar:
“Never doubt my creativity when it comes to dealing below the belt.”

GM:
Krath: “I want the bounty that was posted on her, Captain. I thought that’d be pretty clear by now.” He grins, his teeth bloodied.

Kes-Varn:
Kes’ eyes narrow. “Which ‘her’? There’s a lot of ’her’s here.”

GM:
“The ship ‘her.’”

Kes-Varn:
Kes blinks. “Oh.” With renewed vigor, she bops his head on the ground again. “Well it is mine. Who posted the bounty and why?”

GM:
“The Broker brought it to my outfit’s attention, so you’d have to ask him who posted it originally. The why is because of your little souvenir from Alderaan. He called it the ‘Eye of Oblivion.’”

Kaylani Seren:
“Why do these people never use their /names/? And also, the what of what?”

Kes-Varn:
Her grip slackens slightly. “Alderaan?” she mumbles, puzzled. “What souvenir? I haven’t been to Alderaan in years…”

Caster Novastar:
“He made that name up, though, right? That’s a fake name?”

Kaylani Seren:
slides over to lean next to Zeva, cautiously checking that she’s ok without interrupting Kes’ interrogation
“It does sound super fake. But it sounds like the Broker fellow fooled the big guy here with it?”

GM:
Zeva leans into the lean. Kay sees that the back of Zeva’s right hand has been cut, but it isn’t too bad
Krath: “It’s a holograph image of you and the late Mister in front of a waterfall. Fornaak Falls, I think.”
Bella: “Wow, Kes, even a picture of you is worth a million credits.” Her mouth smiles, but her voice doesn’t.

Kes-Varn:
“Wh— a holograph? I don’t know what they told you, buddy, but there’s only two pairs of eyes on there, and none of them are the Eye of Whatever.” She’s all but got smoke coming out of her nostrils.

GM:
Krath shrugs. “Suit yourself. Anybody know what time it is?”

Caster Novastar:
“Yes let me check my ships clock— oh wait, that’s on fire.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Time to give you to the angry droid, if you’re not going to be useful?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes raises a fist threateningly.

GM:
“Because our corvette should be arriving any minute now.”

Kes-Varn:
She freezes and lowers her fist. “Who is this Broker person? Where do we find him?”

Caster Novastar:
“I don’t believe you. Also, I have a ship to fix that you didn’t completely destroy.”

Kes-Varn:
(Forceful 4)

GM:
“His name is Tesvalo.” Krath seems surprised to find himself answering Kes’s question. “He’s a Chadra-Fan, on Nar Shaddaa. In Hutta Town!”

Kaylani Seren:
whistles “Good job, captain”

Kes-Varn:
“Great!” She punches him anyway. “Hail the droid, he can have his bounty.”

GM:
His grunt of pain is oddly satisfying.

Caster Novastar:
“This is why I work for you, captain. That was cathartic.”

GM:
Zeva: “We should probably be leaving.”

Kes-Varn:
“Agreed. The Empire will have heard that.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Yeah, I’ll see how quickly I can get us going, if you can dump the trash for our new droid friend to deal with?”

Caster Novastar:
“In a bit. We don’t happen to have, like, a homing device around?”

GM:
J16 chirps in the affirmative.

Caster Novastar:
cracks a near smile “Good on you. Let’s go make my ship easier to find when someone inevitably steals it again.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes hauls Krath over her shoulder and stomps towards the loading ramp.

Caster Novastar:
“And also, maybe, pay docking fees for the next thousand years, so I’ve got someone to sue when it happens too.”

Kaylani Seren:
hails IG-88, starts prepping for the fastest launch possible

GM:
J16 accompanies Caster, while Zeva goes to help Kay prep the ship for launch.

Kaylani Seren:
gives Zeva a quick kiss on the cheek when everyone scatters behind them “Glad you’re all right, pretty lady.”

GM:
“I’ll be all right once we’re far from here, anyway.”
The IG-2000 drops a tether line. Krath stares at it in angry disbelief.

Kes-Varn:
Kes starts to laugh and attaches the bastard onto it.

Caster Novastar:
Caster pokes his head out from a new hole in the Vainglory “Have fun, blaster butt!”

Kes-Varn:
She waves pleasantly. “Hope he’s worth something to you, ‘cause he’s not to me!” she shouts up.

GM:
It’s ALL worth it for the spiteful glare he gives you as the bounty hunter winches Krath up onto the ship.

Kes-Varn:
“Caster, move it!” she shouts as she gets back into the ship.

Caster Novastar:
“No, no it’s fine. Don’t spend a second with the ship you crossed the galaxy to get before you abandon it again, no big.”

Kes-Varn:
“Have fun with the Imperials, then!”

GM:
Zeva gets her comlink out, but stops when she sees Kes back on board. “Are we going to Nar Shaddaa, Captain?”

Kes-Varn:
“Hmm. Yeah — but let’s take a longer route. In case anyone gets it in their heads to follow us.”

Caster Novastar:
mopes over to the Silent Destiny “And not be able to provide my subtle wit to this crew? Never.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes finally spares him a small smile.
“Sorry we had to give up your ship again.”

Caster Novastar:
“I do believe the common phrase is, ‘If you want it, you should put a tracker on it?’ We’ll get her again.”

Kaylani Seren:
“Evasive maneuvers, check. I am very sorry for your loss Caster, check. Ready to go?”

Kes-Varn:
“Let’s go,” she affirms, and pats Kay’s head. “Glad you’re good too.”

Caster Novastar:
“Punch it. I might start getting better ideas about leaving the Vainglory behind.”

Kaylani Seren:
punches it

GM:
Nar Shaddaa is pretty much on the other side of the galaxy, so Zeva is still making calculations as Kay flies Silent Destiny out of the docking bay.
Sensors are picking up Imperial fighters in the vicinity, but with all the traffic you should be able to blend in.
You do see the flat gray shape of the HoW corvette, though, which is certainly scouting the area for you.
Sensors identify her as the Frost Harrier.
“So how do we avoid that?” Zeva asks.

Caster Novastar:
“By the force. First the ‘eye of whatever’ now the ‘Frost Harrier’? Is a youngling naming everything for the Hounds of Winter?”

Kaylani Seren:
“Quite probably.”

GM:
Bella gets her datapad and starts a-slicing.
“I’m going to code this as an ISB communique,” she says, in No Big style. “They won’t question orders like that if they know what’s good for them.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes nods in non-understanding approval.

Kaylani Seren:
whistles “You are a very scary lady, I like it”

GM:
Her smile is full of sharp teeth, yet manages to be dazzlingly pretty,
Moments after she hits “send,” three TIE fighters break formation and approach the Frost Harrier.

Caster Novastar:
“Wait, don’t jump. I want to watch this.”

GM:
Zeva lets out an involuntary squeak of relief.

Kes-Varn:
Kes beams at Bella. “Well done.”

GM:
Bella is positively beaming now.

Kaylani Seren:
“Enjoy the show, my dears, we’re on track but not likely to be gone before it’s done. Thank you, Bella.” blows her a kiss

GM:
As soon as they’re in range, the TIEs simply open fire on the corvette.

Kes-Varn:
“I sure am glad that ain’t us.”

Kaylani Seren:
blinks “Well that was unexpected. Lookie, they gave us fireworks.”

GM:
R4-J16 chimes plaintively. [I’m just glad she’s on OUR side]

Caster Novastar:
blinks “What did you te—- nope. I don’t want to know.”

GM:
Frost Harrier gets her shields up a moment too late; she breaks off and makes for orbit in the opposite direction from you
R4-J16 rolls over to Caster and boops.
[They’re all scary in different ways]

Caster Novastar:
To J16 “Look, I really don’t want to speculate. Plausible deniability is important.”

GM:
Shortly thereafter Silent Destiny is far enough outside Iridonia’s gravity well to make the jump into hyperspace

Caster Novastar:
“Captain, a word after the hyperspace jolt?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes nods and motions to the hallway.

GM:
“Our course will take us into the Outer Rim,” Zeva says, mostly to Kay as the other PCs step out. “We still don’t know how big this bounty hunting outfit is.”

Kaylani Seren:
“So we shall have to figure out how to be tricksy? We’re not terribly good at tricksy, but we can try.”

Caster Novastar:
“Oh, it’s not private. Our initial agreement was for me to stay until I got the Vainglory back. I think we need to revisit those terms.”

GM:
Zeva: “At least the only person who knows where we’re going is another bounty hunter’s prisoner.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes leans against the doorframe. “Oh?” she asks, smiling knowingly.

Kaylani Seren:
grins at Zeva “That is oddly comforting, isn’t it?”

Caster Novastar:
“The Vainglory is either no longer ship-shape, or getting her back is only a matter of time.”
“I still have a lot to offer your crew, regardless of my ship’s state.”

GM:
Zeva nods. “I’m glad you’re all right, too. I forgot to say so before.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes makes a show of considering it.

Kaylani Seren:
“I could tell darling, no worries.” grin softens to a regular smile “We do seem to get ourselves in trouble a lot, don’t we?”

Caster Novastar:
“Also, things have been more… interesting… working with you than back as a professional business heir. A man can find it hard to go back to an old level of excitement.”

GM:
She sighs, softly. “More often than not. My apprenticeship was kind of quiet compared to this.”

Kes-Varn:
She taps her chin and "Hm"s loudly.

GM:
“Not that I would trade it,” she adds quickly.

Kaylani Seren:
“I managed quiet for a few years there, myself. It was nice, wasn’t it? But so’s this, so I think I’ll keep it.” winks

Caster Novastar:
“Just a thought. We’ve got some time, and the Silent Destiny is your ship, complete with its own bounty. Can’t have a ship without one of those.”

Kes-Varn:
She finally cracks into a grin and hooks an arm around his neck, just like she knows he hates. “Of course you can stay. You can stay as long as you like.”

Caster Novastar:
squirms “All about making me second guess decisions today, aren’t we?”

Kes-Varn:
At least she hasn’t smooched his forehead yet. She releases him and pats him on the shoulder. “It’s almost nice having you around.”

Kaylani Seren:
“We love you too, Caster, like all the worst sorts of family.”

Caster Novastar:
“I knew I should have recorded this conversation for posterity. Let’s go see what everyone else has cooked up for figuring out how we’re going to deal with Tesvalo.”
“Or you’ve been here the whole time. So, team, what’s the gameplan?”

GM:
Folks gather in the mess hall, like they do.

Kes-Varn:
Kes frowns, then strides off to her bunk, and the footlocker at its base.

Kaylani Seren:
“Our plans never seem to go well. Are we sure we have one of those?”

Caster Novastar:
“They always start out by going well, though.”
“Surely that counts for something.”

GM:
Zeva follows the Captain. Bella does the same, after a pause.

Kaylani Seren:
hmms under her breathsighs*follows*

GM:
“Captain,” Zeva asks, “do you have a holograph like Krath was talking about?”

Kes-Varn:
She settles down in front of it, but pauses before opening the container. Her hand skims the front of it, passing over the latches, but not pressing them. She nods mutely to Zeva’s question. After another moment of silence, she pops the footlocker open.

GM:
Zeva starts to look away, since the ONE thing she was told when she was hired was to stay out of that locker.
However, Bella, leaning over Zeva’s shoulder, is all eyes.

Kaylani Seren:
elbows Bella

GM:
Bella: “What?” (She knows what.)

Caster Novastar:
weighs his options, looks away

Kes-Varn:
Inside is layers of baby clothes, with tiny baby shoes nestled among them, and some toys. They seem hardly used. She carefully shifts them aside to dig out a holograph. She turns it over in her hands a few times before switching it on. Sure enough, it’s a much younger Kes wrapped around a zabrak man slightly shorter than her, both beaming.
After a moment, she switches it back off and holds it out behind her to Bella. “See if there’s anything strange about this,” she says quietly.

GM:
Bella takes it gently, turns it over in her hands.
After studying it for a moment, she takes a pocket tool from her belt and unscrews the baseplate. She carefully removes it and sets the base down to peer at the holograph’s guts.

Kaylani Seren:
wanders back to the mess hallpours a Drink*brings it back and gives it to Kes* “Just in case, Captain.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes takes the drink. The footlocker is still open and she can’t seem to get herself to close it or to look away.

GM:
Bella uses the tool to move the wires around while Zeva wonders if there’s anything for her to say, let alone what it might be.
Fortunately for her (and everyone else) Bella says, “Aha.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes knocks the lid to the footlocker shut. The latches snap together automatically. “Don’t tell me there’s an actual eyeball in there.” There’s a faltering attempt at levity.

Kaylani Seren:
huffs a breath that could be mistaken for a laugh. maybe. if you tried really hard

GM:
Bella laughs nervously. She sits down next to Kes and shows her a secondary data port that someone has installed next to the one where the holo would normally be loaded, slightly hidden behind the wiring.
“That can’t be standard issue.”

Kes-Varn:
“How did that even get there?”

Kaylani Seren:
makes an odd noise in the back of her throat “I feel it wouldn’t help to mention Marta had a setup like that, in a bit of tech or two. At the time, I figured she just wanted to keep stuff out of the public lockers when we were moving ships so often.”

GM:
Bella: “Kay’s right. Data smugglers often do things like this, stash information in something innocuous.”

Caster Novastar:
“Well, since we’re digging through personal things anyway, let’s go look at some definitely encrypted data!”

Kaylani Seren:
“Sorry to compare your life to my mother’s, Captain. Not how I intended to spend the day.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes’ mouth opens, then closes again. Her face gets even more scrunched up. “But who’d do this? With my holograph?” She falls silent as the answer becomes obvious.

Caster Novastar:
“Maybe it was compromised before you ever got it, and you’re just unlucky?”

GM:
Bella: “I can take a look at it, see what it’s holding.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes gives Caster a Look, and nods at Bella. “I hate this, but I have to know.”

Kaylani Seren:
at Caster: “We’re never that sort of unlucky”

Caster Novastar:
“First time for everything!”

GM:
Bella: “I understand.” Her datapad is simply in her hands. She connects it to the secret dataport and gets to work – but stops almost immediately.

Kaylani Seren:
“Mm?” looks worriedly at Kes, then Bella, then Kes again

GM:
“This is insanely encrypted,” she says, directly to Kes. “If I try to open it, it’s designed to erase all the data. It’s looking for a key.”
