STAR WARS

Silent Destiny

Episode III
THE EYE OF OBLIVION

After crossing paths with the JUSTICE ACTION NETWORK and the GALACTIC EMPIRE on Dexus-12, Silent Destiny has returned to Kes-Varn’s homeworld of Iridonia.

Caster, Kay, Zeva, and R4-J6 take the ship to the city of Wortan, looking for the long-lost Vainglory, last seen in Shiri Torr’s possession.

Meanwhile, Kes and Bella Nox take the speeder to the Capital Square market, to stop the Zann Consortium from selling Balin Nerr’s cargo to the odious Dagos Tull…

SESSION 27

You are not sure how much time you have (if any) before the Zann Consortium guys will arrive at Tull’s warehouse, and there is quite a lot of traffic between you and there.
There appears to be a construction zone ahead that’s slowing everything down.

Kes-Varn:
“Of course they have to do it during peak hours”

Bella:
“You can’t expect sense out of a municipal construction crew, now can you?”

Kes-Varn:
“Yes. Yes, I can.”
“I won’t ever be rewarded, but I can.”

GM:
The large transport speeder ahead of you is not moving very fast when it does get a turn to move

Bella:
smirks “I do so enjoy your optimism.”

Kes-Varn:
She tries very hard not to honk. “This is why Kay does the driving and I do the riding.”

Bella:
“We need an alternative plan, is what you’re saying? Before you get out and start pushing people out of the way? I mean, I wouldn’t mind watching that, but it probably wouldn’t actually speed us up.”

Kes-Varn:
“I’d get arrested for road rage.” She rolls her shoulders. “It’s happened.”

Bella:
laughs “Oh, that’s a story I want to hear.”

Kes-Varn:
“There was traffic. I got out of the car. I raged. I got arrested.” She looks wildly around for a way to get out of this slow hell for an alternative route. Even if it’s not 100% legal.

Bella:
“See a handy alley way? Abandoned warehouse? Parked speeder we could use as a ramp to jump over them all?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes laughs at the latter suggestion.

GM:
There IS a maintenance path down below you, but you’d either have to hit the force field hard enough to break through it (Forceful), or hit it at just the right angle (Careful). Or get around it some other way…

Kes-Varn:
(Forceful 1)

Bella:
“Slightly more seriously, an access panel for the signals and lights might be useful. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if we poked around a little.” grins

GM:
Bella switches her datapad on and starts scanning for a signal as Kes pulls into the galactic equivalent of the breakdown lane.
(Roll it)

Bella:
(clever 2)

GM:
Bella is unable to slice the system remotely. There’s an access point about a hundred meters further along the road, though…
Kes is gonna have to make Some Kind of Roll to rejoin the “flow of traffic” though

Kes-Varn:
(Careful 3)

GM:
Kes urges the speeder slowly along the lane. The big transport comes within mere centimeters of clipping your side, but you remain unscathed
And are now close enough to the access point to attempt using it

Bella:
whistles “Nice job.” slides out to look at the access point

Kes-Varn:
Kes pretends the speeder is A Problem

GM:
Bella will still have to slice the system, but at least she won’t have to slice the dang wifi password

Bella:
(clever 1)

GM:
Bella cracks the encryption and lowers the force field, but it takes an embarrassingly long time for her

Kes-Varn:
“Hey! Did you fall asleep or something?”

Bella:
hisses

Kes-Varn:
Kes raises her arms defensively. “Okay, then. Sorry.”

Bella:
slips back inside and gestures at the lack of force field

GM:
You steer onto the maintenance road and finally start moving toward the Capital Square market.

Kes-Varn:
“Finally! Movement!”

GM:
You pull up at the front entrance to Dagos Tull’s warehouse.

Bella:
“Direct approach?”

Kes-Varn:
“I don’t know any other way.”

GM:
Open for business at all points of the light-to-dark spectrum
The entrance does not appear to be guarded, so there IS that.

Kes-Varn:
“Do you see any… I dunno, traps? Cameras? Do they see us coming?”

GM:
Looks clear.

Bella:
shrugs (clever 2)

Kes-Varn:
“All right.” She makes sure her weapons are accessible and makes her way out of the speeder, moving over to open the door for Bella.

Bella:
winks

Kes-Varn:
Clears her throat, motions for her to get out faster.

GM:
You see the unmistakable presence of Dagos Tull at the counter just inside the entrance, an Aqualish hood at his side. He’s talking to a young human woman who’s accompanied by a tough-looking older man, and a shifty-eyed Zabrak fellow.
“Be right with you,” Tull says as he sees you enter.

Kes-Varn:
Kes grunts her assent.

Bella:
stands behind Kes, trying to keep an eye on everyoneespecially the shifty-eyed zabrak fellow*

GM:
“Just sign here,” he tells the woman. “I got all kinds of buyers lined up for those plant fibers.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes stiffens a bit.

GM:
The woman signs the datapad. “It makes no difference to me,” she says, “as long as your payment goes through.”
“It’ll be instantaneous, Ms. Stryder. Same as always.”(he replies)

Bella:
raises her eyebrowswhispers to Kes* “Do we need to?” gestures towards the group at the desk

GM:
Stryder nods, checks the balance on her datapad. Nods again.
“Pleasure doin’ business with you,” Tull says. Stryder says nothing and saunters out, followed by her two “associates.”

Kes-Varn:
“Polite lady,” Kes grumbles, and steps up to the counter.

GM:
“Now, then. How may I help you?” Tull is all smiles as he turns to you.

Kes-Varn:
Kes offers a business-like smile. “We’ve got some questions about them plant fibers, ourselves.”

GM:
His smile falters for a fraction of a second. “Oh? Do you have friends in the armor business?”

Kes-Varn:
“Who doesn’t? Was wondering about the details. Where it comes from, and so on.”

GM:
“Is that so.” The falsehood of his smile becomes all the clearer. “Are you hidin’ some kind of Imperial credentials there, ma’am?”

Bella:
snorts “Imperial?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes begins to laugh. “Right, hail the Emperor or something. No, I just like knowing where my armor comes from. Because—” She wags the flap of her vest “— this does not do as advertised.”
(Clever 3)

Bella:
shakes head sadly in agreement

GM:
“Ohh.” That seems to put him a bit more at ease. This stuff comes from Nakadia – a fine Mid-Rim agricultural world."

Kes-Varn:
Kes blinks in surprise. “Naka— oh. I see.” She straightens, expression business-like again. “And how did you acquire it? You run your own operation or are you just the middleman for whoever shaves the trees?”

GM:
Tull slicks his greasy hair back. “Middleman is as accurate as anything. Those folks who just left bring me all sorts of valuable goods now an’ again.”
“I gotta lot of pies in a lotta ovens.”

Kes-Varn:
“Is the Lucky Queen one of your ovens?” Kes asks sharply.

GM:
“The what now? What is that, a ship?”

Kes-Varn:
“The ship those plant fibers came from, and we’re not happy. We’d like them back, please.” But her smile is quite sharp.
(Forceful 3)

Bella:
grins toothily at him in support

GM:
“Yeah, I bet you would. Even if that’s so, and even if you had some kinda claim on that cargo, it’s mine now. An’ I stand to make a profit on my investment.
He nudges his Aqualish companion, who’d tuned out of the conversation and now stands more upright.

Bella:
sucker-“punch” the Aqualish (Hidden Claws +2, total sneaky +3)

GM:
Bella suddenly lashes out at the Aqualish, raking her claws across his neck (Defense 1). He drops to the floor, bleeding out
Tull emits a high-pitched shriek as the blood sprays over his face

Kes-Varn:
Kes jumps and shoots Bella a ‘what the hell’ look, but draws her weapon and points it at Tull. “Let’s not do this the hard way, Mr. Tull.”

GM:
He glares daggers at her. “I have to concur.”
(additionally high pitched at the beginning of the statement)
He presses a button on the counter. “Kira, bring Lot 237 to the front, please? Thanks.”
“I’m gonna make sure you don’t live long enough to regret this.”

Kes-Varn:
Her smile’s cool. “Get in line.”

Bella:
“Perhaps you should make sure Ms Stryder doesn’t either, as she’s the one who brought the trouble, and left it for you to deal with.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes jerks a thumb at Bella in agreement

GM:
He just fumes at that, because she’s right.
Moments later, a big loader droid comes through the double doors that lead into the warehouse, bearing a large crate.

Kes-Varn:
“Our speeder’s outside,” she says sweetly.

GM:
(It is a damn good thing it’s just the two of you cos that is barely going to fit in the speeder)
The droid beeps acknowledgement and rolls outside
Someone will have to open the doors for him, though.

Kes-Varn:
Kes motions for Bella.

Bella:
opens doors with a smileit probably still has too many teeth*

Kes-Varn:
“I recommend vetting your product sources a little more thoroughly, Mr. Tull.”

GM:
“Lousy Zanies. Must’a left someone alive.”
“What’s this galaxy comin’ to, anyway…”

Kes-Varn:
“I know. People robbing your ship and then selling it on the black market.”

GM:
“Pleasure doin’ business with you,” Tull says again, meaning it even less this time.

Bella:
“You too, sweetie.” all the teeth show up for this grin

Kes-Varn:
“Likewise! Stay safe, Mr. Tull.” Strangely, it does sound like she means it.
She hops into her speeder.

Bella:
(run away! run away!)

GM:
As soon as she’s gone, Tull pushes the Other Button.

Kes-Varn:
“That’s gonna bite us in the ass.”
She glances at Bella. “Try not to shoot or claw people without my go-ahead, yeah?”

GM:
(Probably the best thing to do is to drive the cargo to the buyer Balin originally had lined up, Jaleer Kortu, who isn’t far from here)

Bella:
“You said we were in a hurry?”

Kes-Varn:
“Yeah, but it compromises my leaderliness.”

Bella:
“And the threatening wasn’t working on its own …” trails offsnickers* “leaderliness?”

Kes-Varn:
“Commanderhood.” She gives her a small smile. “Captaining.”

Bella:
“Oh, I like Captaining. Very … active.”

Kes-Varn:
“I like it too. So let me do it, yeah?”

Bella:
“Do I get a treat for good behavior?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes opens her mouth, then closes it, not sure which response is riskier.

Bella:
purrs “I’m gonna take that as a yes.”

Kes-Varn:
“It — would be inappropriate for me to play favorites.”

Bella:
eyes widenbursts out laughing* “I cannot believe you managed that with a straight face, I’m impressed.”

Kes-Varn:
She jumps in surprise at the laugh, almost steering off the route. “I— well, it’s true! Besides, I’m not sure what kind of treats you like anyway.”

Bella:
“Oh, I’m very imaginative. /Anything/ can be fun if you look at it right.”

GM:
As you turn onto the thoroughfare that’ll take you to Jaleer Kortu, the feeling that you’re being followed comes over you… because you’re being followed!
