Star Wars: Silent Destiny

Session 25

In Which Justice Is Served (?)

GM:
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

STAR WARS
Silent Destiny

Episode III
THE EYE OF OBLIVION

The crew of Silent Destiny has destroyed Black Sun’s spy network. With the deaths of both Vigo Shal’mak and her son, the ruthless criminal syndicate is in shambles.

After taking their leave of Kaylani’s Uncle Savit, the crew has returned to work, delivering a bacta shipment to the KOOR INSTITUTE, a medical facility on the Colonies world of Dexus-12.

Still sought by the HOUNDS OF WINTER, the crew arrive at the Koor institute just as a massive explosion engulfs the building. The saboteurs are defeated, but now agents of the GALACTIC EMPIRE have arrived on the scene….
(Kay and Zeva remained with the ship and R4-J16 while this was going on, because there wasn’t room for everybody in the speeder AND the cargo.)
So Kes and Bella are confronting six stormtroopers while Caster remains In Hiding
“Freeze!” comes a muffled voice behind you. You turn to see six Imperial stormtroopers, blasters at the ready.

Kes-Varn:
Kes flops over like a fish and raises her arms while still on the ground. “Hi, guys.”

GM:
“Meesa give up,” Bella says, her blaster pistols clattering to the floor.

Caster:
whispering into comm “We, uh, found some Imperials. Bella and Kes just dropped their guns.”

GM:
“Get up,” the lead trooper tells Kes. Two others move to flank Bella.

Kes-Varn:
“That’s what I told my husband,” she says, pushing up off the floor.

GM:
Kay gets Caster’s message.
A fourth trooper moves to watch Kes while the remaining two pick the unconscious saboteur up off the floor.

Kes-Varn:
“He was doing bad things,” Kes explains.

GM:
“Explain yourselves,” the leader says to Kes.

Kes-Varn:
“Do you want the part about the fellas trying to escape, or just this guy?”

Caster:
still whispering “Kes is being very snarky and not helping.”
still whispering “You know people. Do you know of anyone that can help with posting bail or even better, not getting our friends arrested?”

GM:
“Let’s start with your name, citizen.”
(The last word has a wee bit of stink on it.)

Kes-Varn:
She gives an audible sigh. “Kes-Varn, Captain of the Silent Destiny. This is my navigator, Bella Nox.” She keeps herself from looking around for Caster. Better that no one knows there’s another one.

GM:
“At your service,” Bella says with a dwarven bow.
“We were delivering bacta,” Bella adds, “when we saw the explosion. We had nothing to do with it, officer.” A purr underlies each syllable.

Kaylani:
(to Caster) swears under her breath “I don’t know anyone, no, but I can go be an affronted citizen type person in the right place, I think. You still hiding? Hiding is good.”

GM:
“Can you prove that?” the lead trooper asks.

Kes-Varn:
“Well, our speeder is outside with the bacta, we have our shipping manifest, and I’m sure if you torment this guy instead — " She bobs her head towards the unconscious one. " — he’ll eventually admit he and his buddy shot at us first."

GM:
(can I get a roll of some kind there)

Caster:
whispers “Good plan. The captain is about to try to convince someone of something.”

Kaylani:
sighs LOUDLY

Kes-Varn:
As if sensing Caster being an ass, Kes squints just over the shoulders of the stormtroopers.

GM:
Zeva drapes her leather jacket over the back of a chair, because there is NO need for it outside.

Officer: “All right. You’ll have to come with us until we can sort all this out.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes sighs again. “We could’ve just started there.” But she acquiesces.

Caster:
whispers forever “Annnnd they’re going to the station. Meet you there.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes shoots Bella a small smile that’s half-apologetic and half teasing. “This is why I get up every morning.”

GM:
The troopers lead Kes and Bella out to an ITT.
Bella: “Been awhile since I’ve been detained. At least the company is splendid this time.”
Wipe to the local Imperial IM-455 modular garrison

Kes-Varn:
“That’s some inspiring architecture,” she mumbles.

GM:
It’s a massive prefab Imp HQ.

Caster:
before taking their speeder back to turret castle™, checks to make sure that the cargo did, in fact, get unloaded by the loading bay droids. We did the job, damnit

GM:
Kes and Bella have been asked the same questions many, many times by the time Kay, Caster, and Zeva arrive in the detention wing

Kes-Varn:
Kes yawns largely and obnoxiously.

Kaylani:
Kay in scary-pseudo-lawyer-lady-get-upstalks with a very clear click-clack of heels and glares at whomever poor trooper she sees first*

GM:
Zeva shows up in one of her fancier dresses just because it’s too hot for anything else.
Kay’s victim summons an officer to converse with her

Caster:
is, bizarrely enough, the least well-dressed member of the party not being held prisoner

GM:
A middle aged human male, surprises all around. “I am Lieutenant Jagen Straden,” he announces. It can’t be as important as he tries to make it sound.

Caster:
rolls his eyes

Kaylani:
somehow looks down her nose at him, despite being shorter “Of course you are. I am a member of the crew of the Silent Destiny. I believe you are … holding … our Captain and Navigator here?”

GM:
“They’re being questioned, yes. Any information they may have that leads to the apprehension of these terrorists could be invaluable.” His eyes flick to the large screen in the waiting area, which is showing coverage of the battle to contain the blaze.

Kaylani:
“So, they’re being penalized for, what, not getting killed by terrorists and surviving until you showed up? And you know so little, you’re asking the victims who just happened to be /delivering medical supplies/ to tell you who the terrorists are?”

GM:
His lip curls into something between smirk and sneer. “Captain Varn chose her people well, Ms…?”

Caster:
coughs. It’s the only way to hold back the torrent of insults he wants to unleash at that sneer

GM:
Bella, to Kes: “At least they won’t find anything on my datapad. They can’t have ANYbody around here that good.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes frowns at her. “I hope you didn’t just jinx it.”

Kaylani:
smiles brightly “Why thank you, /Mister/ Jagen. I notice you haven’t told anyone to let my Captain and Navigator go yet?”

GM:
“All in good time. My IT-O is… confirming with the known terrorist that your friends were not working with him.”

Caster:
“Pretty nice setup you got here, Lt. Jagen.”
“Very impressive, walking in. This built under your command or a predecessor?”

Kaylani:
leans back and steps on Caster’s foot with the point of her heel

Caster:
draws his mouth to a thin line through the pain, but keeps his attention on the Imperial

GM:
The veil of Straden’s loathing grows a little more transparent as he regards Caster. “Mine.”

Kaylani:
closes eyes briefly, steps to the side to give Caster a clear line of sight to Stradenis thinking very hard PLEASE DON’T SCREW THIS UP

Caster:
“Of course. It’s clear from how you’re dressed that you’re… well, you’re going to be somebody.”

GM:
This time the smirk is less ambiguous.

Caster:
glances over at Key, tries to say with his eyes, “I know how to deal with assholes!”

Kaylani:
but we don’t want to deal with him, we want to Get Away as Quickly As Possible

Caster:
“Today could be a very big day for you. I mean in the political sense. It’s obviously horrific that people got hurt in this terrible attack, but when your superiors here of your efficency and speed in dealing with this manner…”
“well.”

GM:
(that calls for a roll.)
(Kay Flashily creates an advantage with a +5, Keeping Him Off His Game, 1 free invoke)

Caster:
(Clever roll + 2, invoking Refined Tastes, invoking Keeping Him Off His Game +4 = +6)

GM:
He mulls this over. “I see your point,” he says, finally.

Kes-Varn:
While all this is going on, Kes has her legs leaned up against a wall and her head in Bella’s lap.

Caster:
“Of course. You’ve already got a disposition from both my crewmates. I can assure you of their honesty. Feel free to continue your investigation with it— and I hope to hear about your promotion on the HoloNet soon.”

GM:
Straden goes to order someone to bring the detainees out, but stops as something slices into the transmission on the big screen. “People of Dexus-12,” a voice says, with heavy electronic distortion. “The Empire maintained a bioweapon facility in the Koor Institute without your knowledge or consent. This facility has now been cleansed by the Justice Action Network. We are everywhere. We will smash the Empire. All chains will be broken. You will be witnesses. Freedom! Forever!”

Caster:
“I hate today.”

GM:
The feed cuts back to the fire containment. Straden’s face has gone starkly white.
“Bring them out,” Straden growls.

Kes-Varn:
Kes sits up and shoots Bella a questioning look.

Caster:
“I revise my statement. Hatred of today pending on seeing coworkers.”

Kaylani:
considers stepping on Caster’s foot againrealizes nothing will actually shut him up*swallows another sigh*/please work please work please work/*

GM:
A small group of stormtroopers return the Captain’s effects and ushers her and Bella out into the waiting room.

Kes-Varn:
Kes thanks them as she straps everything back on and adjusts her vest with a relieved sigh.

GM:
Straden takes a moment to pull himself together. “I apologize for your treatment, Captain Varn.” (Truth be told, you’ve had so, SO much worse.)

Kes-Varn:
Kes blinks in surprise. “I — sure. Yeah. Uh… you’re just doing your job.” Or something. She pats him on the shoulder.

Caster:
looks over at Kay “Thanks for the assist. And for moving bodily altercations down from broken nose to foot stamping.”

GM:
That visibly weirds him out, but he moves past it.

Caster:
“Would have been fine without either of those things, but I’ll take what I can get.”

Kaylani:
whispers “shush, no celebrating ‘til we’re back on the ship behind closed blast doors”
mutters “also thank you that was pretty brilliant asshole wrangling”

GM:
“These terrorists are growing ever more bold,” Straden says, as if on cue.

Kes-Varn:
Kes leans forward to peer at the screen. “Do they do this a lot?”

Caster:
“Captain, a moment of your time.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes waves a hushing hand at Caster.

GM:
“Nothing of this magnitude, to my knowledge.”

Caster:
scowls “I didn’t listen to Kay, so I might as well load my bases. What are you doing?”

Kaylani:
considers stepping on the Captain’s toes this timeis aware this would probably be ineffectual*sighs out loud this time*

GM:
(Perhaps Zeva should pretend to be the podiatrist that follows Kay around.)

Kes-Varn:
Captainhood has made her all but immune to demanding lackeys. “Lucky we were at the medical center, I guess.” She frowns at the monitor. She opens her mouth to ask if the bioweapon thing is true, then thinks the better of it. “Good luck with your terrorists.”

Kaylani:
steps backwards, closer to the exit, with an audible /click-click/looks hopefully at the Captain*

Caster:
“Oh, that’s good. You’re taking this conversation in the right direction now.”

GM:
“Rest assured, Captain Varn, that our retaliation will be swift and precise.

Kes-Varn:
“As swift and precise as this whole deal, I’m sure,” she says, and follows after Kay.

Caster:
follows “You’re remarkably friendly for someone who was just in a cell.”

Kaylani:
makes a pained little whimper soundlistens to herself start talking without seeming to be able to stop* “What, perchance, do you mean by … precise?”

Caster:
heelturn, face screams NOT YOU TOO

Kaylani:
widens eyes at himI DON’T KNOW I CAN’T HELP IT*

Kes-Varn:
Kes backtracks quickly to the Imperials. “Wait a minute, do I have to worry about my ship? Is there going to be a lockdown?”

GM:
Straden, to Kay: “Our prisoner will give us the names we need. There will be nowhere in the galaxy for them to hide.”

Kes-Varn:
(i realized i had questions after i started going)

GM:
“No, Captain Varn, you’re free to go. But, if you encounter any intelligence about this network, please do not hesitate to share it.”

Kes-Varn:
(kes: Not My Deal)
“Good to know.” She resumes her exit. (HE SHOT AT US)

Kaylani:
makes unhappy face

GM:
The speeder is now free to hold everybody.

Caster:
eyes dart from Kes to Kay “We going?”

Kaylani:
but TORTURE and ILLEGAL WEAPONS!but Imperials*but almost blew us up!!follows Kesis still clearly unhappy about it*

Caster:
sigh of relief
follows

Kes-Varn:
Kes slings an arm around Kay and Caster’s shoulders. “Thank you, kiddos, for the speedy rescue.”

GM:
Bella: “Yes, thank you. I can only take so much Imperial hospitality.”

Caster:
brushes off the hand, stammers around a thank you

Kaylani:
“Yeah, not really their thing, /hospitality/. Glad to have you back.”

GM:
Kes’s com chimes to acknowledge the transfer of funds for the bacta.

Caster:
“Oh, we even got paid.”
“Remarkable.”

Kaylani:
blinks “Wow.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes blinks down in surprise. “So we did! That’s new.” She glances at him. “Did you finish the loading?”

Caster:
“I mean, yes?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes gets his head in a lock and plants a mommy smooch on his forehead. “Well done.”
She releases him.

Caster:
IT WAS A TRAP
scoots to the far side of the speeder

Kaylani:
“What, I got all fancied up and scary shoes and everything, and I don’t even get a hug? I am hurt.” grins at Kes

GM:
Zeva hugs Kay from the back seat

Caster:
“Can testify, those shoes are scary.”

Kes-Varn:
“She’s got you covered, but you’ll get one too. When you’re not driving.”

Kaylani:
blows Zeva a kissdrives back to the ship*

GM:
As you navigate back toward the spaceport, you can see that the fires have been put out.
Kes also realizes that she’s received a vmail while she was in lockup (reception in there was nonexistent)

Kes-Varn:
She lets out an audible “Uh oh.” She doesn’t usually get calls directly to her.

GM:
The voice is raw, haggard. But unmistakable. “Kes, it’s Balin. Balin Nerr. I could really use your help.”
