STAR WARS
Silent Destiny

Episode III
THE EYE OF OBLIVION

With their spy network demolished, Black Sun is in shambles. Silent Destiny’s crew have gone their separate ways from Savit Saren, but his slicer, Bella Nox, remains on board for now.

Once more in need of work, they have agreed to deliver a bacta shipment to the KOOR INSTITUTE, a medical facility on the Colonies world of Dexus-12.

Still sought by the HOUNDS OF WINTER, the crew of Silent Destiny soon learns that other perils await them….

SESSION 24

Caster:
“So, when do I say that nothing bad can possibly happen doing this? Is it now? Or do we wait?”

GM:
“May as well get it out of the way now,” Bella says as the ship pivots to reveal Dexus-12 outside the cockpit window, this side of the planet brilliantly lit by the system’s three blazing suns.

Kes-Varn:
“Something bad always happens.” She grins broadly.

Caster:
“Yes. Although, with a grin like that, you’re practically inviting trouble.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes glances briefly at Bella to see if she’s looking at the smile. “Well, if it’s gonna happen, like she said — let’s get it out of the way now.”

GM:
Bella gets caught looking and directs her attention to the planet. Slowly.
Kay steers the ship toward the appropriate spaceport.

Caster:
“Oh, well in that case, lemme just get my trouble totem and rub it three times while dancing in a circle. Should summon the trouble.”

Kes-Varn:
“We still have an outfit you can use to help with that.”

Caster:
“The trouble juju is against showing skin. Very puritanical that way.”

GM:
“Is that why you usually rub yer totem in yer bunk?” Kay asks, brightly.

Kes-Varn:
“Don’t answer that.”

Caster:
“Yes, captain.”

Kes-Varn:
She couples that with a stern look at Kay. We don’t need to know about his totem.

GM:
Kay pouts and returns to her work.
(The Colonies are wedged between the Core Worlds and the Inner Rim, so you should be outside the hunting grounds of the Hounds)

Kes-Varn:
(should)
“Totems and juju aside, this is a simple run so, stars willing, we’ll do fine as long as we keep our heads down. At least for now. Build some good karma.”

Caster:
“You’ll get no dispute from me there, captain.”

GM:
Silent Destiny glides down to the planet.

Kes-Varn:
“I’m glad we all like money.”

Caster:
“Really brings people together.”

GM:
Bella grins.
The spaceport is like many others you’ve seen, busy without being overcrowded, and BAKING hot. It’s early afternoon local time.

Kes-Varn:
Kes is in a sleeveless shirt and vest, so everyone can see her guns.

GM:
An Imperial inspection team is waiting for you.

Caster:
“I know I say this about everywhere we go, but I hate this planet.”

Kes-Varn:
“Don’t say that too loudly.” She smiles politely but not too broadly at the team. “Afternoon, folks.”

GM:
Bella steps off the ship and starts panting immediately.

Kes-Varn:
She shoots her a curious glance. It lingers a little too long. “You wanna stay inside where it’s cool?”

GM:
“Welcome to Dexus-12,” the lead inspector says as she approaches. “Your manifest, please?”
Bella: “No, but I think I need to.”

Caster:
“Afternoon. Lets keep this quick, our crew mate isn’t accustomed to this heat.”

Kes-Varn:
“Go on, then,” she says with a small smile while blindly passing off the manifest to the inspector.

GM:
Bella nods in appreciation and climbs the gangplank, clearing the way for R4-J16 as he rolls down.
The inspector looks over the manifest and leads her crew aboard.
J16 wheels himself next to the Captain and stands at attention.

Kes-Varn:
Kes pats his metal head affectionately.

GM:
Kay meets the inspector at the top of the ramp and leads her to the cargo bay.

Caster:
“You think they go through this for the bigger freighters? How many days do the big pilots just hag out in spaceports waiting for inspections to clear?”

GM:
The little droid whistles his appreciation

Kes-Varn:
“A while. Especially if they don’t keep their crew in check and there’s small but still illegal garbage on board. Stashes of spice and whatnot.” She shrugs. “Small is good.”

Caster:
very quietly “… we don’t have a small stash of illegal garbage on board right now, do we?”

Kes-Varn:
“Why would we have that?” she asks brightly.

Caster:
“Because you’ve been chipper all day and it’s throwing me.”

Kes-Varn:
“You haven’t pissed me off yet.”
“Let me savor it.”

Caster:
“Its giving me the creeps. Scowl at something.”

Kes-Varn:
She doesn’t.

Caster:
“… this is only making it worse, isn’t it?”

Kes-Varn:
She’s positively BEAMING now.

GM:
About ten minutes after they went on board, the customs crew returns. “Everything seems to be in order, Captain. You’re free to unload your cargo.”

Kes-Varn:
“Thank you, ma’am. Have a nice afternoon.”

Caster:
goes to unload the cargo. Anything to get away from the Smile Of Death

Kes-Varn:
“I’ve finally learned how to make him work. Excellent.”

GM:
J16 beeps a string of congratulations.

Caster:
“I heard that. And sinister is fine. I can handle sinister. But m’am! From you! And Good Afternoon too! I’ll drink whatever you’ve got squirreled away.”

Kes-Varn:
“After we’re done, you will have your drink,” she promises.

GM:
(You’ve been asked to bring it to the Institute. It’ll fit in the landspeeder, but you’ll have to fold the back seat down. And that only leaves room for you two and maybe one more)

Caster:
“I take it back. I don’t want to end up grinning like that.”

Kes-Varn:
“Don’t worry. It’s genetic.” She asks J16 to keep an eye on the girls so they can keep an eye on the ship instead of each other and blasts the a/c in the speeder for Bella.

GM:
You make the appropriate clicks on the party selection screen and soon you’re driving along the spaceport streets toward the Koor Institute.

Caster:
“We should have uniforms. Special delivery of whatever the hell you just ordered.”

Kes-Varn:
“You know what yours is gonna look like.”

Caster:
“In this heat, it’d be an upgrade.”
“Eh, Bella?”

Kes-Varn:
“We can go back and get it if you want.”

GM:
Bella: “Hmm? Oh, yes. Hot as hell here.”

Caster:
“And leave our poor, poor slicer in this heat? You’re heartless captain. Or you really want to see my legs.”
“Smart betting is on the heartless part, but you never know.”

Kes-Varn:
“If we left the speeder on and brought her some water, I’m sure she’d manage. Maybe even go on a joyride.”

GM:
She says “I would never,” but her tone says “I would HAVE to.”

Kes-Varn:
“Of course not!” Her smile is falling out the confines of her face.

GM:
“Why, I barely know HOW to drive. You’ll have to take ME on a joyride sometime.”

Caster:
“Get a room. For both my ears, and your health.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes’ smile vanishes very quickly and her face grows a few shades warmer in color. “We’re almost there,” she says quickly.

Caster:
“There. That’s the captain I know.”

GM:
Perhaps mercifully for everyone involved, the Koor Institute DOES appear before you.

Kes-Varn:
(Kes DOES hop quickly over to open the door for Bella)

GM:
It’s a gleaming slab of white building, uninspired in design. It rather reminds Kes of the medical facility she plundered with the girls on Alemgotti (*back in the Episode I fiction)

Kes-Varn:
“That looks familiar,” she says glumly.

Caster:
“Hey, is this where there is trouble? Captain’s back to being captain, and we haven’t hit trouble yet, soo…”

Kes-Varn:
“It looks like old trouble, that’s all.”

GM:
“Plenty of hours left in the day,” Bella says. “Probably. I don’t know what the rotation period is like here.”
The perimeter guard looks over your invoice and directs you to the loading dock.

Kes-Varn:
She gives him a short wave in thanks and puts down where directed.

GM:
You begin circling around the building.
When the loading dock comes into view, it’s about a hundred meters away. You don’t see any other vehicles present.

Kes-Varn:
Kes slows down considerably.

GM:
But one of the bay doors opens, and a couple of loader droids emerge.

Kes-Varn:
“A medical facility would be getting plenty more deliveries, I would think,” she says slowly. “But maybe it’s traditional naptime on this planet.”

Caster:
“I’d sleep through this heat.”

GM:
THAT sounds like a tradition worth upholding,” Bella says, stifling a yawn.

Caster:
“I mean, might as well do the unloading thing? Maybe we hit a weird time?”

Kes-Varn:
Kes nods slowly. “Yeah. Let’s be quick about it.”

GM:
You drive toward the loading dock.
And get about halfway there before a MASSIVE explosion rocks the top (tenth-ish?) floor of the building ahead of you.

Caster:
“…”

Kes-Varn:
“Of course,” Kes says after a few long seconds of shock.

GM:
Bella utters a Cathar saying that would get her thrown out of many places back home.

Kes-Varn:
Kes keeps driving towards the dock, though.

Caster:
“Captain, please start smiling again. I’ll deal with the shivers down my spine.”

GM:
A speeder comes tearing around the corner at the far end of the building.

Kes-Varn:
“Sorry, kiddo. Trouble’s here.”

Caster:
“Fine. Lets do this.”

GM:
Bella readies her blaster pistols.

Kes-Varn:
Kes guns the engine and swings to slam into the speeder. “Hope your seatbelts are on!”

Caster:
“We don’t have seatbelts!”

Kes-Varn:
(+4 forceful total)

GM:
(vs Defense +4)
The speeder swerves wildly around yours, glancing alongside and spinning a bit off course (gain a boost)
Bella leans out the window and opens fire on the speeder en passant
(Careful +4 vs defense +1) She punctures the fuel cells, causing the speeder to burst into a massive ball of flames

Kes-Varn:
“That — that works too.”
“I was hoping we could stop them, not set them on fire but — okay.”

Caster:
peeks over his arm “Got ’em.”

GM:
Bella: “Oops.”

Kes-Varn:
“Good aim, though.”

GM:
At this time, a couple of men in fatigues emerge on the loading dock, clad in fatigues and wielding blasters. They watch the flaming wreck of the speeder zip past them and crash into the wall surrounding the compound.

Caster:
“Hey, here’s to hoping they were the bad guys and local law isn’t really into ‘due process’”

GM:
One of them points your speeder out to the other one, and they concentrate fire on you.
(attack +2 and +1 on Kes)

Kes-Varn:
Kes, who had been planning to pull over, quickly guns the vehicle and swerves it in the opposite direction. (2+2= 4 quickly)
(4 and 3)

Caster:
“Wait, we didn’t blow up your facility! Unless you were the people who blew up the facility then we definitely don’t like you, and you probably should keep shooting. Wait no. Don’t shoot.”

GM:
The men walk their fire toward the speeder, but they’re not great at leading a moving target.

Caster:
“Hey, I’m gonna do something you always tell me not to do— try to talk to them.” Caster spends a hot second judging the ground before rolling out of the speeder.
(Quickly +2, rolled +2 = +4)Caster throws his hands up, trying to make the universal sign of surrender

Kes-Varn:
“Caster!” Kes shouts, but it’s too late. “No!”

GM:
The bad guys turn and go back into the building.

Caster:
“Hm.”

Kes-Varn:
“If he started shouting at me, I guess I’d do that too.”

GM:
Bella: “If that was their ride, they might be moving on to Plan B.”

Kes-Varn:
Kes pulls the speeder over near the door but not too near, and perpendicular to the building so Bella has some cover when she exits. She pulls her rifle out of its holster before stepping out of the speeder.

GM:
Bella gets out, too, waiting to see what the play is gonna be.

Kes-Varn:
Kes waves Caster over, keeping an eye on the door and knees bent, ready to spring. “Come on, you moofmilker. Nice exit. Let’s make an entrance now.”

Caster:
tries to roll over the speeder’s hood. Fails. Utterly. “You make the big lights and I’ll find a nice place to be less seen.”

Kes-Varn:
“Smooth.”

GM:
Bella does not do a good job of holding in her laughter.

Caster:
“… I think I may have broken something. Hopefully it’ll still start.”

Kes-Varn:
She moves forward, rifle at the ready. It’s a distinctly military motion, and peers around the edge of the door.

GM:
The stockroom is full of pallets of medical supplies and other goods waiting to be sorted. You spy the two men at the far end of the room, heading for a doorway.

Kes-Varn:
Kes takes careful aim at the taller one and fires. (4-3= 1 careful)

GM:
(Defense 2) The blast hits just above his shoulder. “Keep goin!” he tells the other. “I’ll hold ’em off!”
Bella misses all around the tall one on purpose, creating a Distraction (2 free invokes)

Caster:
Caster gets the hint, and slips around a pallet of crates during Bella’s shooty display, running after the non-courageous guy
(Distraction, rolling sneaking +5 = +7)

GM:
Bella can’t find cover quickly enough to evade the tall one’s blaster fire (2 stress)
She hisses and returns fire, blaster bolts punching messy holes in him (Careful +5 vs defense -2)
Composing herself, she makes an “after you” gesture to Kes.

Kes-Varn:
Kes blinks in surprise, taken aback by the exchange of fire. “You okay?” she asks as she slides through the door.

GM:
“Ask me later,” she says as she falls in behind.

Kes-Varn:
“Luckily this is a medical facility.”

GM:
Kes can now see the other guy toward the end of this hall
And is only peripherally aware of Caster’s presence

Kes-Varn:
Kes picks up speed into a sprint and attempts to tackle him. (Forceful 2+2 = 4)

GM:
(vs Defense 0) Kes drags the man nearly two meters before slamming him to the floor. His helmeted head makes a coconut sound as it smacks the space linoleum, and he loses consciousness.

Kes-Varn:
She pats down his pockets to see if he has any information or cool things.

GM:
She finds an encrypted datapad and hears an “Ooo” as Bella comes up behind her.

Kes-Varn:
Kes doesn’t even look as she’s handing it back to her over her shoulder.

GM:
“Freeze!” comes a muffled voice behind you. You turn to see six Imperial stormtroopers, blasters at the ready.
